Lynch loses House Oversight race as Democrats tap younger lawmaker to lead them on key committee

WASHINGTON—House Democrats passed over Boston Representative Stephen Lynch in selecting their next leader on the Oversight committee Tuesday, choosing a much less senior lawmakerto be part of their vanguard to push back against President Trump.

Democrats instead selected Representatives Robert Garcia, 47, of California, a second-term lawmaker. The vote was 150-63.

Lynch, 70, had campaigned as a steady hand with 24 years of congressional experience who could shepherd investigations of the Trump administration if Democrats flip the House in next year’s midterm elections. He pledged to elevate younger members and let them shine if chosen.
